About this place
When the craving calls for fish grilled over heat until fragrant, Soma in Oshiage makes an inviting stop. At lunchtime, the stars of the menu are the grilled fish sets featuring thick cuts of sockeye salmon or sablefish. The salmon has firm flesh and a pleasing saltiness that pairs effortlessly with steamed rice. Classic midday options such as sashimi sets, deep-fried oysters, and ginger-glazed pork round out the daytime offerings.
Come evening, the chalkboard specials fill with seafood-focused bites designed to pair with drinks. Aromatic skewered grilled eel, fresh Pacific saury, rich monkfish liver, cod milt with citrusy ponzu, and assorted sashimi platters make it easy to assemble a varied meal one small plate at a time. Alongside beer and wine, sakes from Fukushima are on hand, inviting a relaxed and leisurely pour.
Centred around a sunken hearth, the dining room offers about 6 counter seats alongside generously spaced tables, all watched over by the landlady's warm and accommodating hospitality. Note that payment is cash only, so having yen ready beforehand makes for a smooth visit.
